Executive Career Upgrades FAQ: Process, Support, Reviews, and Results

Before anyone signs up for coaching, they have questions. Lots of them.

Who do you work with? What happens in the first week? How long will this take? How do I know it’s working? Can I trust the reviews?

They’re all good questions, and you shouldn’t have to book a call just to get basic answers. So we’ve pulled together the ones we hear most often into one Executive Career Upgrades FAQ. We’ve grouped them by topic so you can jump to what matters to you: who we serve, the coaching process, timelines, support, reviews and results, and getting started.

We’ve tried to answer each one plainly, including the parts that aren’t a sales pitch. If something isn’t covered here, that’s a good question to bring to a consultation.

About Executive Career Upgrades and Who It Serves

What is Executive Career Upgrades?

Executive Career Upgrades is an executive career coaching firm based in Tampa, Florida, co-founded by Tim and Kristina Madden. We help senior professionals plan and run their next career move, from getting clear on direction to negotiating the final offer. We also host the Executive Career Upgrades Podcast, where we share career advice for leaders.

Who does Executive Career Upgrades work with?

Mostly directors, vice presidents and executives. Our clients tend to fall into a few groups:

  • Directors who are ready for a VP role but can’t seem to land it
  • VPs aiming for a larger scope or a C-suite position
  • Senior leaders changing industries or functions
  • Executives navigating a layoff, reorg or acquisition
  • Leaders who’ve been out of the market for years and aren’t sure how it works now

Is ECU a good fit if I’m earlier in my career?

Probably not. Our programs are designed around the realities of senior searches, such as unadvertised roles, multi-stage interviews and complex compensation. If you’re early or mid-career, a lighter or more general service will likely serve you better, and cost less.

Do you only work with people in certain industries?

No. We work with leaders across many industries and functions. What matters more than industry is the level of the role and how ready you are to make a change.

How do I know if coaching is right for me at all?

That’s worth thinking through before you spend anything. Our post on whether Executive Career Upgrades is worth it walks through career stage fit, realistic expectations and the opportunity costs of waiting. If you’re weighing whether to go it alone instead, our comparison of executive career coaching vs DIY may help too.

The Executive Career Upgrades Coaching Process

What does the Executive Career Upgrades coaching process look like?

Every client’s path is a little different, but most programs follow a similar arc:

  1. Discovery. We get clear on where you are, where you want to go and what’s been getting in the way.
  2. Positioning. We turn your experience into a clear story about the problems you solve and the results you deliver.
  3. Market targeting. We define the roles, industries and companies that fit you best.
  4. Materials. Your executive resume and LinkedIn profile are rebuilt around that positioning.
  5. Outreach. You start reaching decision-makers and recruiters, including for roles that aren’t posted.
  6. Interviews. We prepare you for each stage, from first calls to board conversations.
  7. Negotiation. We help you evaluate and negotiate offers so the package reflects your value.

For a deeper look at each step, see our breakdown of what executive career coaching services include.

What happens during onboarding?

Onboarding is where we learn about you. Expect a detailed conversation about your career history, your biggest wins, your goals and your concerns. We’ll usually ask for your current resume, LinkedIn profile and any past performance reviews or feedback that might be useful.

It’s also when we agree on the plan: what we’ll focus on first, how often we’ll meet and what you’ll be working on between sessions.

What onboarding questions should I be ready to answer?

A few common ones:

  • What roles are you aiming for, and why now?
  • What results are you proudest of in the last five to ten years?
  • What hasn’t worked in your search so far?
  • Are there industries, companies or locations you’re open to, or not open to?
  • What does your ideal compensation package look like?
  • How much time can you realistically commit each week?

Don’t worry if you don’t have perfect answers. Working them out together is part of the process.

How much time do I need to commit?

It varies, but plan for a few hours a week. That covers your coaching sessions plus the work in between, such as outreach, follow-ups and interview practice. Clients who protect that time consistently usually see momentum sooner.

Timelines and Career Transitions

How long does an executive job search usually take?

This is one of the most common executive job search FAQs, and the honest answer is: it depends. Senior searches commonly take several months. Your timeline will depend on your target level, industry, location, how flexible you are and how much time you can put in each week.

What we can say is that a focused, well-positioned search tends to move faster than a scattered one.

How soon will I see progress?

Usually well before an offer arrives. In the first few weeks, most of the work is positioning and materials. After that, you should start seeing early signs: more replies to outreach, more recruiter conversations and better-quality interviews.

Can you help with career transitions into a new industry or function?

Yes, and it’s one of the more common reasons people come to us. Career transitions are harder than straight promotions because hiring teams need help seeing how your experience applies. A lot of the work is translation: finding the parts of your background that matter most in the new space and explaining them in that industry’s language.

Transitions often take longer than staying in your lane, so it helps to plan for that from the start.

What if I’ve just been laid off?

First, take a breath. It happens to excellent leaders, especially during restructures and acquisitions. We’ll help you get clear on your story, explain the transition confidently and move quickly without grabbing the first role that comes along.

What if I’m currently employed and need to keep my search quiet?

That’s very common. We’ll help you plan a discreet search, including how to network and talk to recruiters without broadcasting that you’re looking.

Executive Career Upgrades Support

What kind of support will I get?

Executive Career Upgrades support centers on regular coaching sessions, plus help between sessions when you need it. That might mean feedback on an outreach message, a quick prep call before an interview or advice when an offer lands unexpectedly. The exact format depends on your program, and we’ll explain it clearly before you start.

Will I work with one coach or a team?

That’s a fair thing to ask any firm, and the answer depends on the program. Ask us during your consultation who you’ll be working with and what their background is. You should know before you commit.

How is progress reported?

We think reporting progress should be simple and visible. Rather than waiting for an offer to judge success, we track the activities and signals that lead to one, such as:

  • Outreach messages sent and replies received
  • Conversations with decision-makers and recruiters
  • Interviews secured, and how far they progress
  • Feedback from interviewers and recruiters
  • Offers received and how they compare

Reviewing these numbers together helps us spot what’s working and change what isn’t. If outreach is getting replies but interviews stall, for example, we know to focus on interview preparation.

What if something isn’t working?

We change it. A good search is constantly adjusted based on what the market tells you. If your target is too narrow, your story isn’t landing or your outreach isn’t getting replies, we’ll diagnose why and try a different approach.

Do you help after I land a role?

Ask about this during your consultation, as it can vary by program. Many leaders find the first 90 days in a new role are just as important as the search itself.

Reviews, Customer Evidence and Results

Where can I read Executive Career Upgrades reviews?

We’d encourage you to start with independent platforms like Google and LinkedIn, where reviewers are identifiable. Our website testimonials are worth reading too, but they’re chosen by us, so compare them with third-party sources.

How should I read executive coaching reviews?

With a healthy dose of skepticism, honestly. Look for reviews from people at your level, with specific details about the process and the outcome, posted recently. One review means little. Patterns across many reviews mean a lot. We wrote a full guide on how to read Executive Career Upgrades reviews that applies to any coaching firm.

What kind of customer evidence should I ask for?

Good customer evidence goes beyond star ratings. During a consultation, it’s reasonable to ask:

  • Can you share examples of clients with a background similar to mine?
  • What did their search look like from start to finish?
  • Can I speak to a past client at my level?

A firm that’s confident in its work should be comfortable with these questions.

What kind of ECU client results are typical?

The results we aim for are the ones that matter to senior leaders: landing the right role at the right level, moving into a new industry, shortening time between roles and negotiating a stronger offer. That said, every client starts from a different place and works in a different market. ECU client results vary, and past outcomes don’t predict yours.

Do you guarantee a job or salary increase?

No. No honest coach can guarantee a job, a title or a specific salary. What coaching does is improve your positioning, outreach, interviews and negotiation, which increases your chances of a better outcome. Be cautious of anyone who promises more than that.

Cost and Getting Started

How much does Executive Career Upgrades cost?

Pricing depends on the program and the level of support you need, so we share it during a free consultation once we understand your goals. You’ll know the full investment and exactly what’s included before you commit. For a broader look at typical fees in the market, see our guide to executive career coaching cost.

Are payment plans available?

Ask us during your consultation. We’ll walk you through the options and terms clearly.

What happens on the free consultation?

It’s a conversation, not a pitch. We’ll ask about your background, your goals and what’s been getting in the way. You can ask us anything, including who you’d work with, how the process runs and what results are realistic for someone like you. If we don’t think we’re the right fit, we’ll tell you.

What should I prepare before the consultation?

Have your current resume handy, think about the roles you’re aiming for and jot down your biggest questions. That’s it. You don’t need a polished plan.

Still Have Questions?

We hope this Executive Career Upgrades FAQ has answered the big ones about who we serve, how the coaching process works, the support you’ll get, how to read reviews and what results to expect.
